While there are certainly productive and purposeful types of consumer discussion groups, following consumers blindly is a bad idea. It takes a good moderator and courageous planner (often one in the same) to understand what's resonating with consumers or not (and why). We've all seen the focus group slamming film from the Arnold creatives, here's another articulation of similar frustrations.
